Where each pressure unit is used

  • psi and bar: tire pressure, compressors and hydraulics. 1 bar is about 14.5 psi.
  • hPa and mbar: weather reports. They are the same size; standard sea-level pressure is 1,013.25 hPa.
  • mmHg: blood pressure. 120 mmHg is about 16 kPa.
  • MPa and ksi: material strength in engineering.
  • atm: chemistry and diving. 1 atm is exactly 101,325 Pa.

The pascal is the SI unit: one newton of force on one square meter. It is a very small pressure, which is why kilopascals and megapascals are more common.

Frequently asked questions

How many psi are in 1 bar?

One bar is about 14.5038 psi. One psi is about 0.0689476 bar.

How do I convert psi to kPa?

Multiply psi by 6.89476. For example, 32 psi is about 220.6 kPa.

Are mmHg and torr the same?

For practical purposes, yes. They differ by less than one part in seven million.

What is standard atmospheric pressure?

One standard atmosphere is 101,325 Pa, which equals 1.01325 bar, 14.696 psi or 760 mmHg.
