How it works without uploading
Images, PDFs and data files are converted with features built into your browser. Audio and video are converted by FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, which is downloaded once (about 31 MB) the first time you convert a media file and then cached by your browser.
Practical limits
- There is no fixed size limit, but everything runs in your device’s memory. Audio of any normal length works well; video is best kept under a few hundred megabytes.
- Video conversion in the browser is slower than a desktop app, since it uses a single processor thread.
- Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text, so “PDF to text” returns nothing for them. Convert the pages to images and use an image-to-text (OCR) tool instead.
Private by design
Files are opened and processed by your browser on your own device. They are not uploaded to a server.
