US and imperial volume are different

A US gallon is 3.785 liters, while an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 liters, about 20% larger. The same applies to quarts and pints. Fluid ounces go the other way: the US fluid ounce (29.57 mL) is slightly larger than the imperial fluid ounce (28.41 mL). Always check which system a recipe or fuel figure uses.

Kitchen measures

  • 1 US cup = 236.6 mL = 8 US fl oz = 16 tablespoons
  • 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons = 14.79 mL
  • 1 metric cup = 250 mL

One liter is exactly one cubic decimeter, so 1 mL equals 1 cm³ and 1,000 liters equal 1 m³.
