Volumetric flow rate
Flow rate is the volume of fluid that passes a point per unit of time. Pumps, taps and showers are rated in liters per minute or gallons per minute; fans and ventilation in cubic feet per minute (CFM) or cubic meters per hour; rivers in cubic meters or cubic feet per second.
- 1 US GPM = 3.785 L/min
- 1 m³/h = 16.667 L/min
- 1 CFM = 1.699 m³/h
Flow rate equals the cross-section area of the pipe multiplied by the average velocity of the fluid, so halving a pipe’s diameter at the same velocity cuts the flow to a quarter.
