Mass concentration units
Mass concentration is the mass of a dissolved substance per volume of solution. Lab results usually use g/L, mg/L or mg/dL, while water quality reports use ppm and ppb.
ppm and mg/L: in dilute water solutions one liter weighs almost exactly one kilogram, so 1 mg/L equals 1 part per million by mass. This converter uses that convention. It does not hold for liquids with a density far from 1 kg/L, or for gases.
Percent (w/v): 1% w/v is 1 gram per 100 mL, which is 10 g/L or 10,000 ppm.
Molar concentration (mol/L) is a different quantity: converting to it needs the molar mass of the substance.
