About frequency

Frequency is how many times something repeats each second. One hertz is one cycle per second. Period is the inverse: a 50 Hz signal repeats every 1 ÷ 50 = 0.02 seconds.

  • Mains electricity: 50 or 60 Hz
  • Human hearing: about 20 Hz to 20 kHz
  • FM radio: 88 to 108 MHz
  • Wi-Fi: 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz

Rotating machinery uses revolutions per minute: divide RPM by 60 to get hertz. Angular velocity in radians per second equals hertz multiplied by 2π.

Frequently asked questions

How many hertz are in a megahertz?

One megahertz is 1,000,000 hertz.

How do I convert RPM to hertz?

Divide RPM by 60. For example, 3,000 rpm is 50 Hz.

How do I convert hertz to radians per second?

Multiply hertz by 2π (about 6.28319). For example, 50 Hz is about 314.16 rad/s.
