Image Background Remover

Remove the background from a photo automatically and download a transparent PNG, or replace the background with a solid color.

How to use the Background Remover

  1. Choose a photo, or drag it onto the upload area.
  2. Wait while the AI model loads (first use only) and removes the background.
  3. Keep the transparent background or pick a color, then download the PNG.

How the background remover works

The tool uses an image matting model that predicts, for every pixel, how much it belongs to the subject in the foreground. That prediction becomes the transparency (alpha) channel of the result, so fine details such as hair keep soft edges.

The model runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. The first time you use the tool it downloads the model (about 25 MB), which your browser then caches for later visits.

Getting the best result

  • The model is trained on portraits, so it works best on photos of people.
  • Use a sharp, well-lit photo where the subject stands out from the background.
  • Busy backgrounds with colors similar to the subject are harder to separate.
  • Download as PNG to keep transparency; JPG does not support it.

What transparent images are used for

  • Profile pictures and ID-style photos with a plain background.
  • Product and team photos for websites and presentations.
  • Stickers, thumbnails and social media graphics.

Private by design

The image is opened and processed by your browser on your own device. It is not uploaded to a server, so the tool also works offline once the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and the photo is processed on your device.

Why does the first use take longer?

The tool downloads the AI model, about 25 MB, the first time. After that your browser keeps it cached.

Which format keeps the background transparent?

PNG. The result is always downloaded as PNG so transparency is preserved.

Does it work for objects and products?

The model is designed for people. It can work on clear, simple product shots, but results are less reliable than with portraits.
