What the word counter measures

  • Words: groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks.
  • Characters: every letter, number, space and punctuation mark. A second figure leaves out spaces.
  • Sentences: text ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
  • Paragraphs: blocks of text separated by a blank line.
  • Reading time: based on 238 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed.
  • Speaking time: based on 150 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace.

Do spaces count as characters?
