Typing Speed Test

Measure how fast and how accurately you type. Pick a duration, start typing and see your words per minute.

How to use the Typing Speed Test

  1. Choose a test length: 30 seconds, 1, 2 or 5 minutes.
  2. Click the text box and start typing the passage. The timer starts with your first key.
  3. When time runs out, read your WPM, accuracy and error count.

How typing speed is measured

Typing speed is given in words per minute (WPM), where one “word” is standardised as five characters including spaces. This makes results comparable whatever text you type.

WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Only correctly typed characters count towards your score. Raw speed, shown after the test, counts everything you typed. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were correct.

Typing speed levels

WPM Level
Under 25 Beginner
25–40 Average
40–60 Above average
60–80 Fast; suitable for most office jobs
80 and above Professional

How to type faster

  • Learn touch typing: keep your fingers on the home row and do not look at the keys.
  • Aim for accuracy first. Speed follows once errors are rare.
  • Practise for 10–15 minutes a day; short, regular sessions work better than long ones.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?

The average adult types about 40 WPM. Speeds above 60 WPM are fast, and professional typists often exceed 80 WPM.

How is WPM calculated?

The number of correctly typed characters is divided by five to get words, then divided by the time in minutes.

Does accuracy matter?

Yes. Mistakes are not counted towards your WPM, and fixing errors in real work costs more time than typing a little slower.

How long should a typing test be?

One minute gives a quick snapshot. A 2 or 5 minute test is a better measure of the speed you can sustain.
