How metric prefixes work

A metric prefix multiplies a unit by a power of ten. “Kilo” means 1,000, so a kilometer is 1,000 meters and a kilogram is 1,000 grams. “Milli” means one thousandth, so a millimeter is 0.001 meters. The same prefixes work with every SI unit: watts, hertz, bytes, liters, volts and so on.

To convert between two prefixes, multiply by the ratio of their factors. Mega to kilo is 106 ÷ 103 = 1,000, so 5 megawatts equal 5,000 kilowatts.

In 2022 four new prefixes were added: ronna (1027), quetta (1030), ronto (10−27) and quecto (10−30).

Frequently asked questions

What is the order of metric prefixes?

From large to small: giga, mega, kilo, hecto, deca, (base unit), deci, centi, milli, micro, nano, pico. Each main step is a factor of 1,000.

How do I convert micro to milli?

Divide by 1,000. For example, 500 micrograms equal 0.5 milligrams.

What comes after giga?

Tera (10¹²), then peta, exa, zetta, yotta, ronna and quetta (10³⁰).
