Mulch and Soil Calculator

Work out how much mulch, soil, compost or gravel you need to cover a bed to a chosen depth.

How to use the Mulch and Soil Calculator

  1. Enter the length and width of the bed in feet or meters.
  2. Enter the depth you want (inches, or centimeters when using meters).
  3. Read the volume in cubic yards and the number of bags.

Mulch and soil volume

Volume = length × width × depth

With length and width in feet and depth in inches, divide the depth by 12 first. A 20 × 5 ft bed covered 3 inches deep needs 20 × 5 × 0.25 = 25 cubic feet, which is 0.93 cubic yards or 13 bags of 2 cubic feet.

Recommended depths

  • Bark or wood mulch: 2–3 inches (5–8 cm)
  • Compost top dressing: 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm)
  • Topsoil for a new lawn: 4–6 inches (10–15 cm)
  • Decorative gravel: 2 inches (5 cm)

One cubic yard covers about 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep. Bulk delivery is usually cheaper than bags once you need more than a cubic yard or two.

Frequently asked questions

How much mulch do I need?

Multiply the bed area in square feet by the depth in inches and divide by 324 to get cubic yards.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet: 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet or 9 bags of 3 cubic feet.

How deep should mulch be?

Two to three inches is ideal. Deeper layers can stop water and air reaching plant roots.
