Roofing Calculator

Estimate the area of a pitched roof from the building size and roof pitch, with the number of squares and shingle bundles.

How to use the Roofing Calculator

  1. Enter the building length and width, including overhangs if you know them.
  2. Enter the roof pitch as rise per 12 units of run (for example 6 for a 6/12 roof).
  3. Set a waste allowance and read the roof area, squares and bundles.

How roof area is calculated

A sloped roof has a larger surface than the floor area beneath it. The footprint is multiplied by a pitch multiplier:

Roof area = length × width × √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²)

Pitch Angle Multiplier
3/12 14.0° 1.031
4/12 18.4° 1.054
6/12 26.6° 1.118
8/12 33.7° 1.202
10/12 39.8° 1.302
12/12 45.0° 1.414

Squares and bundles

Roofing is sold by the square, which covers 100 sq ft. Standard three-tab and most architectural shingles come three bundles to a square. Add 10% waste for a simple gable roof and 15% for hip roofs or roofs with valleys and dormers.

Frequently asked questions

What is a roofing square?

A square is 100 square feet of roof surface. A 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares.

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Most shingles need three bundles per square, so multiply the number of squares by three and round up.

How do I find my roof pitch?

Measure how many inches the roof rises over 12 inches of horizontal run. A 6-inch rise is a 6/12 pitch.
