Time Duration Calculator

Find the time between a start and end time in hours and minutes, with breaks removed and a decimal-hours figure for timesheets.

How to use the Time Duration Calculator

  1. Enter the start time and the end time.
  2. Enter any unpaid break in minutes.
  3. Read the duration in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. Add an hourly rate to see earnings.

How the duration is calculated

Both times are converted to minutes after midnight and subtracted. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the period runs past midnight into the next day, which suits night shifts.

From 09:00 to 17:30 is 510 minutes, or 8 h 30 min. With a 30 minute break the working time is 8 hours.

Decimal hours for payroll

Timesheets and invoices usually need decimal hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 8 h 45 min is 8 + 45 ÷ 60 = 8.75 hours.

Minutes Decimal hours
15 0.25
20 0.33
30 0.50
45 0.75
