How to calculate a tip
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100
For a 50.00 bill with a 15% tip: 50 × 0.15 = 7.50, making a total of 57.50. Split between two people, each pays 28.75.
Quick mental maths
- 10%: move the decimal point one place left.
- 20%: find 10% and double it.
- 15%: find 10% and add half of it.
Tipping customs
Tipping varies by country. In the United States 15–20% is usual in restaurants. In much of Europe a service charge is included and rounding up is enough, and in some countries, such as Japan, tipping is not expected. Check whether a service charge is already on the bill before adding a tip.
