About voltage
Voltage, or electric potential difference, is the “pressure” that pushes charge through a circuit. One volt drives one ampere of current through one ohm of resistance (Ohm’s law: V = I × R).
| Source | Typical voltage |
|---|---|
| Nerve cell signal | about 70 mV |
| AA battery | 1.5 V |
| USB port | 5 V |
| Car battery | 12 V |
| Household mains | 110–240 V |
| Power transmission lines | 110–765 kV |
Metric prefixes scale the volt in steps of 1,000: 1 kV = 1,000 V and 1 V = 1,000 mV.
