Which image format should I use?
| Format | Best for | Transparency |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos; small files, works everywhere | No |
| PNG | Logos, screenshots, graphics with text | Yes |
| WebP | Websites: 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality | Yes |
| GIF | Simple graphics limited to 256 colors | On/off only |
| BMP | Uncompressed images for older software | No |
| ICO | Windows icons and favicons | Yes |
Converting HEIC photos
iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. Many websites and Windows programs cannot open them, so converting to JPG is the usual fix. HEIC decoding uses an extra component that is loaded only when you add a HEIC file.
Good to know
- Converting to JPG replaces transparent areas with white.
- Converting from JPG to PNG does not restore quality lost to JPG compression; it only changes the container.
- Animated GIF and WebP files are converted as a single still frame.
Private by design
The image is opened and processed by your browser on your own device. It is not uploaded to a server, so the tool also works offline once the page has loaded.
