How animated GIFs work
A GIF stores a sequence of frames that play one after another. Each frame can use at most 256 colors, which is why GIFs suit simple graphics, screen recordings and short loops better than full-color photos. This tool chooses the best 256 colors for every frame.
Speed
The time per frame is set in milliseconds. 100 ms gives 10 frames per second for smooth motion; 500 ms shows two images per second, which suits slideshows. Most browsers treat delays below 20 ms as 100 ms.
Keeping the file small
- Reduce the width: 480 px is enough for most messages and posts.
- Use fewer frames or a shorter loop.
- Images with flat colors compress far better than photos.
All frames are scaled to the proportions of the first image. Choose “fill and crop” to avoid borders when images have different shapes.
Private by design
The image is opened and processed by your browser on your own device. It is not uploaded to a server, so the tool also works offline once the page has loaded.
